A Childhood Memory

Day 18, Saturday: Tell a story from your childhood. Dig deep and try to be descriptive about what you remember and how you felt.

I was about 7 years old. (I think.) I do not remember the details that led up to it but I had a pet turtle. It seems like my dad might have found it. I remember having it in a box and feeding it raw hamburger. I loved that turtle. I was not afraid of it and I remember feeling pretty special having a pet turtle. I would pick it up and pet it, you know normal Elvira kind of stuff.

One day, I decided to take it for a walk. My dad was outside and gave me the OK. I walked that turtle all the way around the block. When he would veer off the sidewalk, I would straighten him out. That was one long walk. We were on the homestretch when a neighbor saw my turtle. He asked what I was doing and I told him that I was taking my turtle for a walk. He came over to get a closer look and told me it was a snapping turtle and that I better watch out!

I left my turtle there and ran home. I was scared to death it was going to bite my fingers off. Mind you, I had had this turtle for days and I just got done walking for God only knows how long and I was now afraid of it! Yeah, my dad was a tab annoyed too. :)

I would not touch it after that day. Dad had to go get it from down the street and ended up having to let it go.

Ha! I sound kind of wimpy but I really wasn't! :)
